Cover Art and Menus: 7/10
For a movie based on a graphic novel the image needs to be kind of in your face and I think this cover might fit that bill. I like the style of it even though I might, on other occasions, find it obnoxious. I’m hypnotized by it. I would have it as a small poster in my home theater room. The menu is a still image with navigation at the bottom, ho hum.
- Band Of Buddies Ops Training – You have seen this type of feature before the actual on set weapons expert shows you his arsenal.
- The Losers Action Style Storytelling – My favorite extra. which gives you a bit of behind the scenes on the actual author and artist of the Graphic novel The Losers is based on.
- Deleted Scene – One deleted scene that does not make much sense but is cool anyway 🙂
- Sneak Peek Batman Under The Red Hood – A 16 minute SD look at a cool new HD Batman release.
- Zoe & The Losers – A small EPK style feature on how Zoe mixed with the boy’s during the shoot.
The Movie: 7/10
Seven out of ten is a fair semi-high kinda score for a movie such as The Losers. It’s big, bold, loud, action packed, and full of piss and vinegar. I think the most exciting of movies can sometimes just really shake away the cobwebs of my brain and I do like a good shake now and then. I’m not sure a displaced group of special forces soldiers looking for revenge on a nasty piece-of-work bad guy is the most original shaking material, but it’s all in the umph that matters.
The umph of The Losers has that swagger, kick-ass moxie and all that good stuff. If you know what I mean you have either seen it or you are tapped into my brain with some iPhone app. This is just that kind of flick that makes me want to make up funny gnarly phrases and words to express that power kind of fun I had watching it.
The cast is spot on for me. I dig the dudes, yea yea. The woman though, Zoe Saldana, she grabbed every scene, every line, every raucous fight. She’s awesome. I was a little bit spellbound to be quite honest. A strong woman in amongst a crew of rowdy dudes, I like it.
The bad buy, Jason Patrick, OH MY GOODNESS…he’s creepy and good and scary. I like that he’s merciless, uncompromising, loopy, and Patrick does an awesome job for me in this role.
The action sequences kept my attention, and that’s saying something. I have this thing, movies with long drawn out fight scenes and action scenes get a tad boring so my mind wanders. There was no wandering in this movie.
I mentioned the lack of originality overall, sure, the story isn’t brand spanking new, but in every scene, conversation, there is something interesting and entertaining around every corner. There is enough comedy tucked in between tension moments to keep it very clear that they are not taking it all too seriously and that is one of the best elements of a movie like The Losers. It’s not heavy, mind bending, life changing, it’s just fun.
Audio & Video: 8/10 (By Ascully)
The Losers hit’s Blu-Ray sporting a detailed somewhat overblown, over colored stylistic transfer. Director Sylvain White captures the look and feel of it’s mostly tropical based locations with a saturated, hot looking image that never fails to impress. The 1080P/VC1 transfer uses a 50GB BD disc and keeps the bit-rate high throughout the presentation. Black levels are seriously black almost ink-like, this is in keeping with the comic book nature of the movie and really works well.
LOUD LOUD LOUD, those are the three words I use to express the DTS-HD Master Audio track used on the disc. This is a vibrant audio experience that mixes explosions with some awesome music. Surround speakers are almost always active with explosions and sniper shots ringing around the room with perfect clarity. Dialog is clear and centered like it should be and overall if you are an action movie fan there is a lot of like here.
I really LOVED The Losers. It’s the perfect summer movie. Turn off your brain let the action take you away it’s a great night at the movies you might even have a few laughs too. Like Doomsday from last year (another movie most people hated but I LOVED) I highly recommend this movie, do not be fooled by the review’s if you like action you will find something to tickle your fancy here.
It’s a rental for me. I liked it a lot. I had a good time. This just isn’t a movie that needs to be on my shelf. If you find the Blu-Ray for 10 or 12 bucks, fair enough add it to your collection. Otherwise, rent it and enjoy.
