The Movie: 7.5/10
Can I boil down a review to one sentence? If I could it would be this, “I liked it better the second time.” Is that enough? Probably not.

The first time I watched it I think I was just trying too hard to SEE everything on the screen, and everything else was a bit of a blur. I did like the story, and the performances were good for a fun action adventure flick. It’s such a fantasy world created with a love of technology, the 80’s, movies, video games, and that sense of fun, that’s my favorite thing about it, it’s a big pot of immersive nostalgia:) Even though I didn’t catch a LOT of the references the first time, and a lot of the video game nods were lost on me, the second time around I had a lot more fun finding all the nuggets of my movie watching history.

I will say that some of the CGI is a bit ropy, but hey, it’s a massive world that has been created one pixel at a time with hundreds and thousands of characters and objects and many scenes that look fantastic. I will say that watching a second time washed a way a lot of my nit-picking about the occasional weirdness with the CGI.

I have seen it twice, and to be honest, I would like to relax on the couch again with my popcorn, a glass of pop, my blanket, and watch it again just for fun, and that’s saying a lot since the first time I watched it I was very neutral about it.

The only real complaints I would have at this point would be the really lame way they try to make our leading lady seem unattractive by putting a birthmark on her eye. It’s ridiculous to say he has to “overlook” such a thing, when she’s absolutely what would be considered a beautiful young woman. It’s almost silly, like when an “unattractive” character pulls off her eye glasses and becomes a bombshell.

The tension is built-in the standard Spielberg way, lots of comedy, cuteness, watered down violence or threat of violence, and quirky characters who are slightly unpredictable, but still fit in the formula of this type of movie. I have to say, that works for me.

It’s a pretty epic movie with lots of moving parts, and it had a lot to live up to, apparently it was a book before:) Overall I say it’s a great time at the movies, even if it’s just sitting on your couch watching it for the 3rd time.

Features: 7.5/10

  • The 80’s: Your The Inspiration (6 Minutes) – Ernest Cline and the cast discuss the inspiration for the 80’s choices in the film.
  • Game Changer: Cracking The Code (57 Minutes) – A superb almost movie length exploration of the movie. This actually goes into a lot of detail on the Shining sequence which is my favorite part of the movie.
  • Effects For A Brave World (25 Minutes) – An exploration of Spielberg’s extraordinary special effects in the film. ILM really stepped up to the plate here and we get to see how they created Virtual Reality sets.
  • Level Up: Sound For The Future (8 Minutes) – A look at how the different Avatar voices were mixed.
  • High Score: Endgame (10 Minutes) – A close look at the score written by Alan Silvestri.
  • Ernie & Tye’s Excellent Adventure (12 Minutes) – Ernie Cline and Tye Sheridan sit down for a chat at the Austin Film Premier.
  • 4kUHD, Blu-ray & UV Digital Copy

Audio & Video: 10/10
Ready Player One’s transfer here is incredible and much easier on the eyes than the theatrical version was for me. The movie features a lot of very fast panning shots and in the cinema I had a hard time focusing on everything that was going on. Here on the home video version things are a lot smoother and Warner have kept the bit-rate very high. Black levels and skin detail are exceptional here and I doubt you will see a nicer transfer in 2018.

The Dolby Atmos transfer used here is LOUD and rousing just like a Spielberg movie should be. Any scene inside the Oasis is a whirlwind of surround sound effects that are so incredible it’s hard to believe what you are hearing. Dialog is very crisp and clear and very easy to hear even during huge battle sequences.

Overall Score 7.5/10
