Ash Vs Evil Dead Season 1 Blu-Ray Review

Ash Vs Evil Dead Season One On DVD & Blu-Ray 8/23/16 From Anchor Bay/Starz

The Show: 10/10
The Evil Dead franchise has a special place in my heart. Back in 1982 I got a copy of the original from the video store (I was 12 years old) and it literally blew my tiny little kid mind. I had never seen anything like it. Ash, the anti-hero fights off the Deadites with such style and panache. The idea of the creepiness of being trapped in a cabin is still used in lots of different horror movies today. It stood out as one of my favorite movies and is still part of me to this day. Later came Evil Dead 2, a remake of sorts, and then the hilarious Army Of Darkness that would take Ash in a very new direction. Then finally in 2013 the remake that would launch Evil Dead to a whole new generation.

Fast forward to Halloween 2015 and Ash Vs Evil Dead the series, which had long been rumored, came to our HD TV screens. Once again it had the right amount of humor, blood, and terror to satisfy me all these years later.

Ash Vs Evil Dead is set 30 years after Army Of Darkness. Ash has spent his time avoiding responsibility, maturity, and the Deadites. One drunken night when he’s trying to impress a girl he decides to let her read passages from the Necronomicon and all hell breaks loose. The series then takes 10 half hour episodes to tell the new tale of Ash as he teams up with sidekicks Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana Delorenzo) to fight the newly risen Deadites.

The show really is a gift to Evil Dead fans. Sam Raimi even directs a couple of the episodes. It retains everything that was great about the movies, gore, humor and expert camerawork that became the trademarks of the franchise.

If you’re a fan of Evil Dead what are you waiting for? Go out and buy this now!  It’s like a 5 hour Evil Dead 4 movie. With another season about to start on Starz I think this is only the start of Ash’s new adventures. If you’re new to the series make sure you at least watch Evil Dead 2 before going in. You will thank me for it later.

Features: 6/10

  • Audio Commentaries On All Episodes – Bruce Campbell is featured on eight of the episodes. Sam & Ivan Raimi are on the other two. For fans of the series this is pure gold.
  • Inside The World Of Ash – A 16 minute look at the series that pretty much spoils the whole season, so only watch if you have seen the show already.
  • How To Kill A Deadite – EPK style featurette.
  • Best Of Ash – A compilation of Ash’s best moments in the show.

Cover Art and Menus: 6/10
Ash Vs Evil Dead comes in a Standard Blu-ray case with a lenticular slipcover. The artwork is quite cool and will look good in your Evil Dead collection. How about a Necronomicon special edition Anchor Bay?

Audio & Video: 8/10
From the first Evil Dead movie to Ash Vs Evil Dead the TV Series, the picture quality of the franchise has come a long long way. Anchor Bay/Starz have spanned Ash Vs Evil Dead’s 10 episodes across 2 Blu-Ray discs here at 1.78:1 aspect ratio. This is really the first Evil Dead installment that is filmed digitally in HD and it looks really impressive. Black levels are deep and inky and the blood (a lot of blood) is always red and vivid. CGI special effects look kinda crappy to be honest but that is the nature of the show and its Evil Dead so I forgive it.

Audio is literally top-tier here with the DTS-TrueHD 7.1 track actually surpassing the 5.1 audio that aired on Starz. Surround sound is used almost all the time with thunder, gunshot’s, chain saws and Deadites all sounding great. Dialog is crisp clear and focused this is a TV show that actually sounds like a movie.

Overall Score 8/10
